"Dr. Wallace, they just weren't ready for your personality." This was the feedback that I received after an interview about two years ago. "They," were men. White men. Go figure. Yep. I said IT. I am not apologizing for my personality. And. WIll. Never.
What part were "they" not ready for?
Personality: the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character.
What exactly does it mean? "They just weren't ready for your personality."
AWWWW! Ok. I get it now. MY character. It was too distincive for "them."
The formulation of my qualities were intimidating? Knowledge. ConFidence. (I'll tell ya'll about that F later). Articulation. EYE contact. On Point.
Qualities: a distinctive attribute or characteristic possessed by someone or
something.
Distinctive: characteristic of one person or thing, and so serving to distinguish it from others.
BAM!
Distinguish: perceive or point out a difference.
EYE am difFerent.
We ALL are.
I am who I am.
Which is why I birthed PrincipalChick.
Female Principals are placed in a box. Black. Female. Principals. Are placed in an clear plastic box with strings. "They" have to see everything that we do. Watching your next move. Disecting your humanity. Are we included in the "everyone" when defining humanity. Nope. Not a question. That was a statement. Go ahead and be reflective. You better cross that T and dot that I. Female. Principal. With "yo" black selF.
"They" want us to conform to what they define as normal. Don't say that. Don't do that. Don't call her. Don't meet with him. And. If you step out of "normal" your strings are pulled and back to ~normal~ you go! Ha. BUT it's not funny.
Personality: the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character.
Get on my level "guys" you ain't on my latitude. ~Trina~
THAT'S MY ATTITUDE!
This absolutely gave me life. Although I am just beginning my journey to principalship, I deal with this type of behavior as an educator. This short message was very empowering. Thank you for sharing.
